A tragic scene has unfolded in Kibwezi, Makueni County, after a 13-year-old boy was killed in a crocodile attack while fetching water from the Athi River in the Kanyonga area. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon, sending shockwaves through the local community as families and neighbors mourned the young life lost too soon.
According to witnesses, the boy was drawing water when the crocodile struck, dragging him into the river before any help could reach him. Residents rushed to the riverbank in an attempt to rescue him and recover his remains, but their efforts were ultimately in vain. The river’s strong current and the predator’s speed left little chance for intervention.
Authorities have yet to recover the body, and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers are reportedly being engaged to assist in tracking the animal and supporting the recovery mission. Locals are now calling on the government to install safety measures and increase patrols along the river to prevent future tragedies, especially with children often tasked with fetching water in remote areas.
