In the early hours of Saturday morning, over 10,000 litres of toxic Kangara were destroyed in a major crackdown on illicit alcohol brewing in Soweto village, Kahawa West, Nairobi. The operation, led by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), was conducted in partnership with National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) and the Nairobi Regional police unit. Acting on intelligence, the multi-agency team launched a pre-dawn raid at 5:00 a.m., forcing the illegal brewers to flee and abandon the site.
Authorities uncovered an extensive brewing operation on-site, including 30 jerricans of Chang’aa and a network of large drums and distillation tanks. All equipment was destroyed to prevent future use, with the sweep concluding successfully by 8:30 a.m. The raid is part of Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen’s 100-day rapid results initiative targeting illicit alcohol production and distribution across the country.
NACADA CEO Dr. Anthony Omerikwa praised the effort, calling it a decisive warning to what he described as "peddlers of death." He emphasized the agency’s commitment to dismantling the illicit alcohol trade nationwide, urging Kenyans to assist by reporting suspicious activities through NACADA’s toll-free hotline, 1192.
